12 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Logo Designer

Short answer: the questions that matter most are whether the design is original, how many concepts and revisions you get, whether you receive vector source files and full copyright, how long it takes, and what happens if you are not happy. Get clear answers in writing before you pay.

Most logo disappointments come from things nobody asked about at the start: files that cost extra, a revision limit nobody mentioned, or a “custom” logo that turns out to be a template. Twelve questions, asked before you pay, avoid nearly all of them.

About the Design

1. Will my logo be 100% original?

The answer should be a clear yes: designed from scratch for you, with no templates, stock icons or clip art. Red flag: vague answers, or a portfolio full of designs that look like each other.

2. Will a real designer create it, or AI?

AI tools have their place, but a business logo needs to be distinctive and protectable. Ask who actually draws the concepts. (More on this in AI logo design in 2026.)

3. How many concepts will I see?

Two or three genuinely different directions is a good minimum. One concept leaves you with a take-it-or-leave-it choice.

4. Can I see work for businesses like mine?

A good portfolio shows range across industries and styles. Look for logos you would be proud to put on your own sign.

About the Process

5. What do you need from me?

A professional will ask for a brief: your business, customers, competitors, and styles you like. If nobody asks, the first concepts are guesswork. Our logo design brief template helps you prepare.

6. How many revisions are included?

Get the number in writing. Unlimited revisions on your chosen concept is common at good services. Red flag: per-revision fees that only appear after the first draft.

7. How long until I see first concepts, and the finished logo?

Typical first-concept times range from 24 hours to a week or more. See our realistic logo design timeline for what to expect.

8. How do we communicate?

Email, an online project area, calls? Know who you will deal with, and how quickly they usually reply.

About What You Receive

9. Which files will I get?

You need vector files (AI, EPS or SVG) for signs and print, plus PNG and JPG for web and social media, in colour and black and white. Red flag: “source files available for an extra fee”. See logo file formats explained.

10. Will I own the full copyright?

Once you have paid, all rights should transfer to you, so you can trademark the logo and use it anywhere. Ask for this in writing.

About Price and Risk

11. What is the total price, including everything above?

Add up concepts, revisions, files, rights and any rush fee. Compare totals, not starting prices. Our logo cost guide shows typical ranges.

12. What happens if I don’t like any of the designs?

Look for a clear money-back guarantee, and read what it covers. A provider who stands behind their work will tell you exactly how it works.
